The shorter version (usually heard on American Top 40 during its chart run) was not affected in this ruling. The matter was brought up to the Canadian Radio and Telecommunications Corporation (CRTC), and on January 13, 2011, the CRTC ruled the full album version of the song illegal on Canadian radio, and ordered a ban on the song. In 2010, a listener who heard the full album version on a radio station in Newfoundland, Canada, made a complaint about a homophobic word mentioned three times in the lyrics. The song is noted for incorporating computer animation in its video, and featuring the infamous slogan "I want my MTV", for which Sting of the band The Police sang backup. Money for Nothing was the only #1 song in the United States by the British band Dire Straits, taken from their biggest-selling album Brothers in Arms.
